Honoring Progress and Strengthening Community Trust
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, New York – February 21, 2025. Today, the firm solemnly marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X by reflecting on his enduring legacy as a young man and champion of civil rights, self-determination, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. We also recognize the progress made as a modern society in upholding First Amendment rights through peaceful demonstrations, fostering trust and accountability in law enforcement, and advancing justice for all.
Malcolm X was a zealous advocate for the dignity and rights of black people and the Muslim community. His call for justice and systemic change continues to inspire generations working toward a more just and equitable society. His words remind us that true progress is measured not only by policies, but by the lived experiences of people.
As we honor his legacy, we also recognize the strides made in strengthening relationships between communities and law enforcement. For example, the New York Police Department’s Neighborhood Policing strategy represents a comprehensive approach to community-based patrolling that emphasizes collaboration, communication and connectivity between officers and residents. Likewise, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken steps toward increased transparency and civil rights protections, acknowledging the importance of public trust and engagement. The modern approaches of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York Police Department reflect a broader commitment to upholding Constitutional rights, including our First Amendment right to peaceably demonstrate, while advancing a bedrock mission of law enforcement, which is to protect us, and, whether we admit it or not, that can sometimes include a need to protect us from ourselves. As a firm, we hereby acknowledge the advancements of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York Police Department, while respecting the life and legacy of a civil rights advocate and young man.
Additionally, we recognize the efforts of the State of Missouri—our firm’s domicile—which, in 2019, was among a few states to consider formally commemorating Malcolm X through an official state holiday. This moment in history underscores the ongoing recognition of his contributions and the lasting impact of his advocacy.
On this day, we remember Malcolm X’s pursuit of change, the progress made in law enforcement’s approach to community engagement, and the ongoing advancement of civil rights. We remain committed to continuing the work of building stronger, more united communities, honoring the legacy of those who fought for justice. As we continue to advance through Black History Month, let us aspire to abide by Malcolm's final words. As we advance as a society through the twenty-first century, and beyond, the way we view past events does not have to be dispositively ruled by the way past events have been, and are, presented to us.
