We all have a shared responsibility to ensure that disabled veterans are not unfairly excluded from receiving the support they need and to which they are entitled as a matter of law and policy

New York, New York — Hof is proud to announce its recent collaboration with key stakeholders that include Services for the Underserved (S:US) Homebase, and others, to work through a critical issue to help ensure that veterans receive the housing assistance they deserve. Bottom line, VA disability compensation should not be considered as gross income when calculating eligibility for New York City's Fighting Housing Eviction and Prevention Supplemental (CityFHEPS), a vital form of housing assistance in the form of rental assistance for many low-income New Yorkers.
CityFHEPS is a vital program designed to help New Yorkers at risk of homelessness secure stable housing. Eligiblity for CityFHEPS depends upon one's gross income, and misunderstandings about income eligibility requirements, specifically, what is considered part of gross income, can create unnecessary barriers for veterans applying for assistance. Hof recently met with folks at S:US Homebase and the City, to obtain information and help ensure that veterans, caseworkers, and advocates have clear, accessible information about how VA disability compensation should be treated in the application process. After meeting with such key stakeholders, Hof created a Fact Sheet and shared it with key stakeholders including S:US Homebase.
“We are committed to advocating for the fair and accurate application of housing assistance policies, particularly for those who have served our country,” said Joe Hof, a veteran with a 100 percent evaluative rating. "Additionally, we hope that the easy-to-reference Fact Sheet will help eliminate confusion and help other veterans in their pursuit of critical benefits to which they are entitled, without feeling horrible for feeling a desire to obtain them. We all have a shared responsibility to ensure that disabled veterans are not unfairly excluded from receiving the support they need and to which they are entitled," said Joe.
This initiative reflects Hof’s ongoing dedication to legal advocacy and policy clarification for vulnerable communities. We encourage veterans, service providers, and legal professionals to review the Fact Sheet and use it as a resource when assisting with CityFHEPS applications.
